Sage: RSS Reader for Mozilla Firefox

by David Sudjiman ~ October 11th, 2005. Filed under: News.

I was happy enough to read news from several websites using email subscription. The problem was that I have to deal with more spam as I was only using one email address. Fortunately, I can trick this a bit using Yahoo Email Protection Guard which makes me able to create several different email addresses. However, that was still not quite good solution to download several news including news you don’t want to read and usually it still requires you to go to the URL source to read the whole news.

Thank God there is RSS! RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is another pleasing way to read and gather news from different sources. RSS gives you the index of the (latest) news from particular website and all you need to do is to put this link index to your RSS reader. You can have several lists on your RSS reader as I tempted to use these 27 lists. Some people are just want to know everything and even have more than 100 lists. It does not matter how many lists you have. RSS reader only download the header the news and if you interested, you can just open the header link which gives you the whole news. A very nice way to sort out which news you want to read.

There are several RSS reader available on the Internet (not to mention it is Free! as well). You can read it on the web as several websites like Bloglines, Google Reader, Kinja, NewsGator Online, and Yahoo’s RSS client give you help to index all of the lists you have. All you need to do is create the list on one of these websites and that’s it. It will fetch the news and you can read it everywhere you need. Just log on to your account and enjoy the reading.

As I spend more time at home, I prefer to have my own RSS reader rather than have to log on to particular web-based RSS reader. I need something light and can be integrated with my Mozilla Firefox. Then I found this Sage. Sage is a lightweight RSS reader which allows you to index RSS list using OPML standard. As there are two main RSS list standard like Atom and RSS, Sage can handle both of these standards.

Using Sage, first you need to index the RSS lists. Alt+s to open Sage sidebar on Mozilla Firefox and just right click on the sidebar to add ‘New Bookmark’. To read it, just right-click each detail news you want to read on the lower sidebar box and open it on the new tab or just skip it for the next list. It doesn’t take a genius to use this.

Of course, You don’t have to use Sage for yourself like me. If you interested, you have a look here for several RSS readers available.

Bye-bye news mailing list, welcome RSS!

Is Sage available on Mac OSX?
I use NetNewsWire Lite, a free version of its counterpart NetNewsWire.
    It serves its purpose well.
    =)

I just got Sage up & running. I’m disappointed. It seems to function just like bookmarks. I had assumed it would list the sites I had imported, showing new posts in bold, but this doesn’t happen.

Is there an RSS reader that marks new posts?

    Thanks, David L
