IE7 cannot associate with telnet program.

If you happen to use IE7 and found out that you can no longer use the telnet program associated with IE7, put this key on your registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl\FEATURE_DISABLE_TELNET_PROTOCOL

Name: iexplore.exe
Type: REG_DWORD
Data: 0

Why use Telnet? It’s better to use SSH.
If you are in Windows, just use PuTTy which is free to use and very small in size

You’re right. SSH is more secure than Telnet.

Basically this option in IE7 provides access to any of default telnet program like PuTTY and SecureCRT.

You could ask why use IE7 really? As far as solving a problem, thanks David - this IS useful.

I use telnet for my lab and I do not care if it is secure as it is dynamic and telnetting to terminal servers is universal in my lab at work.

SSH is “better” in the sense of not wanting people to see your information, sure. I don’t think this registry edit is endorsing a specific telnet client. I use PuTTY and SecureCRT for telnet, but that still doesn’t help me if I have a link open in IE7 and I click on it, not sure why you mentioned PuTTY?
