Thinkpad T41 Memory. Don’t Use Kingston KVR333X64SC25.
by David Sudjiman ~ January 27th, 2007. Filed under: Opinion.I believe it’s the time to upgrade my Thinkpad memory. The main reason is to use more VMWare instances and use Dynamips for my Cisco lab. My computer is Thinkpad T41 2373-1FA and from the info I’ve got from IBM website, my memory is PC2700 Cl2.5 333 MHz.
Well, I love Burwood, that’s the place I’ve been living for the last 3 years. We can get almost everything here including this computer store which I consider quite cheap even when I compared from Capitol Hill Computer shops in Central City. Well, I actually went to this store which I consider the cheapest computer store in Sydney but they didn’t have it.
I bought these two KINGSTON KVR333X64SC25 - 1G / 1GB 333MHZ 200PIN SODIMM. I was actually quite happy when I got this since I’d been looking around and couldn’t found PC2700 1GB memory.
First, I installed 1GB as the they promised me another 1GB few hours later. It was working fine. I put 1GB with my 512MB Memory. No errors, no nothing.
The problem came when I installed the second 1GB memory, together with another 1GB memory. System crashed, several times and sometimes couldn’t even got my computer to boot up. It was really strange as I got all the specifications right. I had to spend my several hours just to find out what was wrong. I came to the conclusion that there was somehow, beyond my mere mortal power, compatibility issue occurred.
I went back to the shop today, explained them what happened. Fortunately, they’re happily asking me to replace KINGSTON KVR333X64SC25 - 1G / 1GB 333MHZ 200PIN SODIMM with CORSAIR 1GB VALUE SELECT PC - 3200 200 - PIN SO - DIMM DDR RAM. I know It was not 333MHz, but it worked. It was finally worked.
Therefore, I’m telling you guys, don’t buy this KINGSTON KVR333X64SC25 - 1G / 1GB 333MHZ 200PIN SODIMM for your Thinkpad T41. It won’t work.
Anyone wants my 256 MB and 512 MB PC2700 memories?

Are you sure it was not just an faulty memory chip?
The specs match the specs of the kingston KTM-TP9828 which Kingston recommend as Thinkpad T41 RAM. The Kingston KVR333X64SC25 is the value edition (a lot cheaper). I would love to upgrade my T41 with the KVR333X64SC25, but do I dare to blame your experience on bad luck with the memory chips??!! I would love to hear your advice…

Used two chips, none worked. Swapped it, none worked.

Yep, my Thinkpad has been acting weird with this RAM. I called Kingston and they said to replace it with a KTM-TP9828 chip. They told me not to use the ValueRAM in my Thinkpad, alone or in combination.
